Maybe it is just me, but so much is breaking down. People are not thinking, and it's really beginning to show. Like the rusty shell beneath the flaking veneer of paint.

Anyone who does impressions knows that to mimic a celebrity...you oftentimes adopt their facial expressions, mannerisms, and you pay close look at their mouths, the way their jaw is set, etc.

And a lot of language is repetition of that kind of thing.

I watched a guy use an app to speak spanish and did the thing where he repeats the words said on a screen, but accent and pronunciation is very much based on seeing how the mouth makes the words.

I remember Miss Cobb my Spanish teacher in high school who was a very small woman...you would watch her mouth, the way she rolled her r's and pronounced different letters. That was a lot of what she taught, well aside from masculine and feminine grammar.

Also you are dealing with educational institutions, and sadly it sounds like Japan is infected with the same sort of stupidity as our country with the "not to hard and not too easy" advice. I would ask for examples. It's nebulous and vague.

Yikes, this reminds me. There is another of your comments I need to reply to. That will have to wait.

Everyone who teaches language know the importance of both hearing the language unencumbered by static, background noise an even without it being specifically taught, by a mask or face shield or both, and being able to see the mouth of those speaking the language.

Yet, most of my esteemed colleagues just chose to ignore these facts and continue to draw their pay as they adopt the role of playing teacher instead of actually teaching.

That is why this is so frustrations, I am telling people who know what they know but they continue to act as if they do not know and demand that I play along. I will not play along.

I take your point on the vagueness of “not too hard and not too easy”.. but we are all seasoned teachers who should be able to gauge this. What we can not gauge is the extraordinary pressures these past three years have put on our students. Theses are 18 to 20 year olds who have not been allowed to socialize at all for the better over 3 years and only artificially so, with masks and barriers between them, for 6 months after a relaxation of the madness. I usually give my students what they think is a lot but is laughably little compared to what I had as a collage student but am giving little now. They have a lot of rebuilding of their lives to do that if not done to some degree they will fail at school and more importantly, in life.

To your point of "I will not play along": I recommend sending the email.

I went to an appt at an eye doc to discuss the possibility of lasik. Masks required sign on door - ahh, just haven't made the effort to remove it now that the insanity is passed, I tell myself. I walk in and offer my ID to check in - and nervously note the basket of face diapers to the right of check in. And everyone in the waiting area as well as staff with the tool of ignorance firmly in place. We're not still dong this right? Staffer copies my ID, gives it back and offers me a mask for the wait. I didn't say a word and walked out.

Have not regretted it for one second. I know - my situation has different consequences than yours. And that's what they are counting on....

Before walking out, I would've said "I don't wear masks. I'm not a slave." That way, she would repeat what I said to her employer.

I actually went on yelp and left a review along the lines of “I can’t trust a “doctor“ who is still pushing this nonsense.” First time I have ever left a review for anything online.

Needless to say, they had the review removed.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

What is the point a review site if the reviewed can remove reviews they do not like?

Edward Hunt's avatar

I will wager that they petitioned to Yelp to have the review taken down because they were “following CDC guidelines“ or whatever, and as we know, big tech is in on the scam

Were they wearing goggles? If they are going to play medical theater, they should know that it's Biohazard Level 3 theater and that theater requires the 3D glasses of medical theater being goggles.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

Shhhhh! I was told to wear googles on campus in January or Feb. this year.

One of the things I know about myself...is underneath this person that is fine with clutter is someone down deep who is a frustrated and would love to run at maximum efficiency. My question has been "do they really want me as part of Team Mask?" If they want me on team mask, I am going to show them in why it is so meaningless. Because I am going to go out and get the "biohazard 3 starting kit." I will make myself broke in the process, but who cares because it is not for me, but everyone else around me. Grandma should survive..forget the fact that she lives in a Gulag Archipelago of self delusion.

There will be spot inspections and consequences.

Is there any air in the seal...out of my sight!

Does your N95 respirator have any moisture, you must change it!

Did you touch your respirator? Change it out it has been corrupted! Is there a weird taste in your mouth, are the chemicals of the N95 making you nauseous through prolonged use...Shut up and wear it, your saving lives, and although you may "feel" sick, you're not dead are you?

Not proper eyewear? Out of my sight!

Can you smell or taste anything other than sterile air? Your mask has been compromised!

Has it been two hours? Time to change out your mask.

Have you been wearing the same N95 and "cleaning it" Out of my sight! You have failed!

I think a good portion of those who claim to be part of the cult of the mask will quickly lose enthusiasm if they knew what level of efficiency they would have to function at in order to become part of the illumamaski. Sadly there would be a portion of people that would be all in on it if it meant a further way to signal how awesome they are.

I don't know what to tell you other than you're not alone. And your fighting the good fight not only for those around you, but for your children and loved ones...though they do not see it that way. All things serve the narrative.

You malicious compiler, you. There actually is such a thing, or so they tell me. If I ever get called out by the “brass” on my unmaskedness, I will be doing just that. “You just touched your mask! Go wash your hand and don a new mask and don’t touch it until time to change it you unhygienic, filthy bastard.”

Enjoy the camping. Hopefully, things will not be so SNAFU. Let me know if you see any bears wearing masks.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

Thanks. Gonna be hot.

Doubt we’ll see bears but but there will be many masked campers. All the staff were still wearing them when we were there in July. Suffering terribly too for it.

Guy Incognito's avatar

That's pathetic. I no longer will feel sorry for these people. It's too much of a burden. I will laugh at then though. That's fun.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

I am too full of rage to laugh at them.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

None of the staff were wearing masks yesterday but I saw one staff member wearing one today. All of the employees at the conbini we stop at for ice cream on the way home were masked though.

Send it, you'll be doing them a favor by giving an honest reply. Maybe there will be someone honest about this that will read it, or not.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

I just might. Right now I am taking the advice to not reply when angry and applying it to email.

Edwin's avatar

No, you must reply when angry, just do it with cold calculating efficiency, rather than raw emotion. But, nothing wrong with your comment, just explain yourself a little further. But, that explanation should come after the comment, not before!

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

I should have added that angry is my normal state of late. I should have stated not replying when furious or in a rage and not mere anger.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

If professional language teachers do not already instinctly know that language acquisition is severely hampered my masks and face shields then I lack the ability to explain it to them.

Edwin's avatar

It may take more than once, or twice, or a hundred times, but they should confidentially admit to you "they know."

Let me tell you a story, completely true.

I was working at Jacksonville General Hospital in 1980, and I refused to take the required flu shot. This was unacceptable to them, so the upper level management came to see me, in the office. Briefly, I told them I wasn't getting it, and my concerns. They finally said they would let me take a saline shot, but I couldn't't tell anybody about it. I said I don't have to, I pushed the intercom button on the phone as soon as you showed up.

It was a lovely afternoon at the beach.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

What was the fallout form that, if I may ask?

Edwin's avatar

Never worked at a Florida hospital again.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

I bet it was.

In the past 3 and 1/2 years I have not even seen most of my esteemed colleagues. Those I have were just in passing. The one I was in touch with via email hasn’t replied since I reminded her of the importance of unimpeded listening.

And just now, my wife is complaining about me not paying for things for the house.

Outlook bleak.

Edwin's avatar

Yep, same here, outlook very bleak.

Future, even bleaker.

Kitsune, Maskless Crusader.'s avatar

Just sent it along with the other information they asked for.

My son has been having difficulties understanding spoken language since the end of last year and more recently with pronunciation. I am more that ready and willing to go head to head with those “Doctors” running the med school.
