One of the side discussions was the tone of derision the Irish Catholics had for those that converted to Protestantism in order to be given soup by the British. There was a term that arose out of this called "Taking the soup."
What is old is new. In a similar fashion DEI, SDG, ESG are all new world religions, and "taking the soup" is wearing a mask, taking a vaccine, and accepting the social credit system.

I have faith that the majority of the population will rise up and defeat this madness. I was encouraged to see the crowds at Suzuka this weekend and it appeared that many were NOT wearing masks. Perhaps the tide is starting to turn?
If the tide is turning in my area, it was doing so in the most undramatic fashion. Never were slightly more than 50% observed were maskless. Recently, one coffee shop I frequent has reinstalled their plastic barrier between to cashier and customers. They never dropped the masks.
My kids must still Mokushoku, eat in silence, at school and must don a mask when picking up lunch and returning the empty tray.
I am not at all optimistic. Then again, I have lost most my income and as employers are still mask crazy, I need this madness to end so that I can find more work.
I'm seeing mostly older people masking here in Western Japan. Well under 50% of people watching baseball last week were masked. I'd say 10% maybe 20%. Masking does seem to have started up again recently but it seems to be limited to older people, school kids aren't - at least not on the way to/from school as they did before.
Most of the elementary kids I see in town are without masks but my kids tell me that at the masked out number the unmasked. They are still not allowed to talk during lunch and must don a mask to pick up their lunch trays and again to drop them off. Of the kids I see on the train, by far most are masked. I saw three students at my school today unmasked in the hallway and a staff or faculty member also unmasked. Better than 100% masked but just barely so.
The one thing I question in this article is that I am under the belief that it is illegal to to violate fiduciary principles when investing other people’s money or deciding what a corporation does. Though it may be a civil violation and making it a criminal act would be needed if it already is not.
I do not know but I suspect that corporations in Japan have jumped aboard the ESG bandwagon for no other reason than “that is what the cool kids are doing” with US corps being the cools kids. The Japanese government said that with covid, they are just following what the US CDC is recommending. I know that many adverse changes to primary education in Japan over the years was just imported from the US because that is what the US was doing and nothing more was required as a reason. Thus, I suspect similar in the corporate would here.
The possible exception being, and this is a biggie, that Japanese corporations are just as needy of investment from BlackRock and the rest as as those in the US.
Looking into this earlier, it seemed that ESG was omnipresent here in Japan. But, I have no idea the percentage of all major entities in Japan the vast numbers of ESG statements I found represent.
