I'd been thinking about Foo since we'd exchanged comments about her illness on Celia Farber's blog regarding the death of her cat Jack. It seemed no further news about Foo was good news. I was very glad you were getting more time with her.
When I saw the title of this piece, I knew what had happened. This is such sad news. Through the brief conversation we had about her, Foo felt familiar to me - almost as if I'd met her. And I guess in a way I had because you described her so well.
Though I didn't know Foo personally, I do know a couple of things for sure. She was an extremely fortunate kitty to have found her way to your family. You were devoted to her and made every effort to take the best care of her that was possible.
Best of all, she was valued as far more than a pet. She was truly a member of your family and knew she was much loved.
Thank you for sharing the details of Foo's funeral. I had no knowledge of how a cat's death was handled in Japan. It was fascinating to read. The respect given to the bones of your beloved Foo.
was touching. Her life and death were honored.
My heartfelt condolences to you and your family on the loss of your precious Foo.
I do not recall when exactly I posted about Foo on Celia Farber’s Substack, but we had reason to be hopeful. Sadly, ten days later that hope was dashed and all our efforts became just keeping her as comfortable as possible and no longer to restore health. It was rough. To keep her from continuing to lose 200 grams a day I had to feed her every 20 minutes as she would eat so little at a time. I was successful and was even able to get her to gain 100grams a day. She was on a special holing calorie diet and the other two cats would eat her food if left with her to eat when she was able. Isolating her was not practical and we didn’t want to anyway. Thought it would be cruel to do so. In the end, she stopped eating altogether and a week later she passed away.
Just saw Foo's picture. It made me smile. What a lovely girl she was! Foo looks much like my cat, Macy. Same colors and similar markings with the beautiful green eyes.
I'm sadly familiar with the situation you described about trying to feed Foo. Getting cats to eat in the late stages of kidney disease is incredibly challenging. That you succeeded in putting some weight on Foo is amazing. It's a testimony to your determination to help her. A small miracle accomplished by love.
Thank you for sharing beautiful Foo's story. A reminder that yes, life is more than "covid". Much more.
