Savvy that. Reminds me of Paul Reiser in Mad About You ruminating aloud about sea shanties. Worlds collide!

Sea shanties talked about in a movie not featuring sailing vessel sailors?

I have been hooked on sea shanties since 1986 or 87 when the genre and Irish folk music were introduced to me by a reenacting friend on our way to a reenactment. Part from this group, reenactors, I have never run across any who appreciated or could even tolerate sea shanties.

Just before the panic, I learned somehow that a friend in Hong Kong was really into them and through him I learned that there has been a recent interest in them. Though, most of what I have found people calling shanties are fore bitters of forecastle songs. Still sea songs and often quite nice ones.

Mad about you is a rom sitcom from the nineties. They were mentioned for comedic value. There is a similarity between sea shanties and a lot of Irish music.

One of my best memories of family growing up was staying awake and among the grown ups for an Irish sing along. My grandfather and Uncle Dan presided over the festivities. A lot of alcohol was injected, it was a loud joyful raucous affair.

Lots of crossover between the two genres as there should be given how many Irish worked sail vessels.

Wonderful memories those must be.
