So, asking for a friend, if you are wearing one of those nice masks what good does the video camera do?

Excellent question! There was a time, not so long ago, when the answer was, not much. While they still may be seen, photos at ATMs of people wearing a mask, oversized, dark sunglasses and a baseball cap pulled down as far as it can be and still allow the perp to see the ATM screen with the caption, “Have you seen this person?”, were more common then. However, with the nearly universal camera surveillance that has existed in bigger cities for some time now, whatever the catch on the cameras monitoring the unmanned registers is enough for the authorities to track where the person went afterward. Eventually, they will remove the mask revealing their face or lead the police to the residence. Police can also back track to determine where they came from. There have been cases where just that has happened. The first I recall was years ago where they followed a murderer back to his apartment many kilometers away from the scene of the crime, though various neighborhoods and train stations.

Somewhere, it is in a big (really big) database and we will stop at nothing to get the perp that failed at paying the 80 cents for a water.

Tracking down a murderer, not so much.
