The future for all of us is uncertain, from your posts I see a person that is part of a close community of supportive diverse friends and that person sustained those friendships over many years which is not easy, it required time, effort and commitment especially as a stranger in a foreign land. Regardless of outside circumstances that individual cannot be erased and will carry the ability to make meaningful connections with him wherever he is.
I’m glad you shared this and can’t think why you would regret it. Such experiences help you to rediscover your authentic self and cast aside the negative energy that has been dominating your life for so long. Your cultural understanding and language abilities will always help to give you an edge in a place like Japan and while many of these girls might seem like unobtainable candy, I think you have more going for you than you realise.
I had to look up the maid thing. I tried weighing what would make me more uncomfortable: eating at one of those establishments or going to a Hooters. I think the Maid thing is more respectable, but yes, like going to a candy store and realizing you are diabetic.
Still, when I ate out a lot here in the States, and one of those restaurants had a pretty waitress, that would have a huge effect on how often I patronized their restaurant. I had no such illusions that "we" would be together, but it was a great ego boost to have them wait on me and flirt...and they felt comfortable in knowing I wasn't some odd creeper.
There is variety in maid cafes. Mine refuses to send maids out on the street to catch people and direct them to the cafe. Of the two, Hooters is the less uncomfortable for me, though I have never been to one. Not my character to do all the cutesy stuff before I can eat and drink we have to do at a maid cafe. At Hooters, you just enjoy the scenery as it walks by. Though, as I have never been there, I may be wrong.
I have fun at the maid cafe because I get to see my students and see them use what they learned or are still learning in my lessons.
Another point, it is the only place I can go now and it be guaranteed that none of the servers are wearing masks.
The other night, I went on a Twitch stream that was in Tokyo. The streamer was Australian. He walked into and out of a variety of stores, and one was a 7-11. Inside, there were two cashiers, both wearing masks, but one was wearing it under his nose which says to me that they are required, but not everyone is bought into the practice.
Unrelated: That person who blocked you from their substack, I also get his substack, and for me, it is interesting that they state "bombshell" and other headlines in their stacks that are not "bombshells."
It's gratifying to be appreciated! I am glad you are respected and admired by your students (those truly committed to the study, who are smart enough to recognize the value of your instruction).

The maid cafes are far more classy.

The person who blocked me has a history of, shall we say, interesting headlines. This just happened to be on a subject I knew something about.
A lot of people wear them under their nose on the street, including Westerners. They are all just brain dead.

The narrow-minded will never "get" you.
Congrats and kudos on your steadfast efforts.
Keep planting seeds.
Take it where you can get it!
