Is there no way you can take her? You are her hooman?

While cats ARE independent, their bonds are very clear - and taking a hooman away from a cat - well. I shudder to think!

Sadly, no. I considered it, looked at apartments that allow pets and looked at my future prospects here. I want to bring her with me. I am going from an house with kids, 4 cats and a “wife” with at least one cat meeting me at the door when I get home, and will in days be coming home to silence.

Apartments that I found that allow pets cost more and I cannot afford that difference and cat food. Yesterday,Mia was taken to the vet where her kidney disease was confirmed. Her special diet is even more expensive. Just can’t afford this.

The bigger, biggest issue, is that I will most likely be moving back to the US in a year and a half. Mia is too old and frail for the trip and quarantine. What do I do with her then?

I should add that the realtor I choose advertises as having many “Pet OK” rental properties.

Cats are very independent. I think Mia will land on her feet, but you will be missed.

I have another friend who had a cat adopt him. But a couple of months back, the cat left and never returned. It doesn't mean the cat died (although that could very well be what happened) but more often than not, cats figure things out and endure.

Yes, but seeing how she has changed since Foo passed away, I am less than hopeful. She too now has a kidney problem and despite it being The Kid’s chore to feed the cats, I do so most of the time. I can easily see the rest of the family forgetting to feed them. Thankfully, some is looking after their water.

Hope your new digs allows Mia to reside with you.

Nope. It was hard enough to find a landlord that will rent to me given all the strikes I have against me; non Japanese, non regular employee with pitifully small earnings. There are many that now allow pets, few that allow foreigners. Besides, I can’t afford the higher cost of places that accept pets nor her food and the electricity bill in the summer so she doesn’t get roasted while I’m at work. I also hope she lives longer than a year and a half and she is too frail to take back with me to the States.
