I can't recall who came up with this ingenious solution, but basically make sure that you have the exact changes, including taxes, to pay. Leave the cash and take the item. They may not like I, but it's legal tender.

Working at a gas station in college, I would get all sorts of not so common bills and coins. I would buy these from the register. At times, the only cash I would have was large amounts of “silver” dollars, fifty cent pieces and two dollar bills. I couldn’t use these easily as the clerks at the registers did not know they were real US currency. In a much more recent story, a man was actually arrested for attempting to use 2 dollar bills. The clerks, manager and arresting police officer had never learned that such things exist and assumed he must be a counterfeiter.

Where I live (red part of a deep blue state), businesses give discounts for people paying cash because the credit card companies punish businesses by charging fees

That’s the way it was before I left for Japan, but if what I a reading, things are changing in the States. Am certainly seeing changes in Japan.
