One of the more just plain stupid things going on now is the concern over micro plastics by mad maskers who have most likely embedded larger plastic fibers in from the prolonged use of masks. Morons. Natural selection at its finest.
I recently watched the Illusion of Consensus video between Mark Cuban and Rav Arora. Although most of the video, at least the first part was all DEI, Cuban kept repeating why the mainstream media version of DEI and what he talks about differs, and that is "Virtue Signalling." He repeated it many times over. I would submit that there is quite a bit of virtue signalling in masking. I imagine there were also many people taking selfies this weekend in the states of the "No Kings" protest. So much is incumbent upon virtue signalling that it far outweighs any rational reason for participating in it.
I believe you are correct that Virtual Signaling plays a big part in the West but less in Japan. Conformity plays a bigger part here. But even that was during the mask “recommendation” period. Now, it seems either employer mandates and actual fear with women who got used to not applying make up but nevertheless refuse to be viewed with out it.
